The University of Arizona College of Fine Arts presented documentaries from the film/television school recently. These were created by Junior Students. My husband and I both learned things we had never realized existed. One thing we became aware of was Slash Fiction or Slash Culture. From Wikipedia “Slash fiction is a genre of fan fiction that focuses on interpersonal attraction and sexual relationships between fictional characters of the same sex. While the term was originally restricted to stories in which male media characters were involved in an explicit sexual relationship as a primary plot element (also known as “slash” or “m/m slash”), it is now used to refer to any fan story containing a pairing between same-sex characters”. A popular pairing is captain Kirk and Spook. Another term we learned was “shipping”. Again from Wikipedia “Shipping, derived from the word relationship, is the belief that two characters, fictional or non-fictional, would be interesting or believable (or are, or will be, or should be) in a romantic relationship. It is considered a general term for fans’ emotional involvement with the ongoing development of romance in a work of fiction. Though technically applicable to any such involvement, it refers chiefly to various related social dynamics observable on the Internet, and is seldom used outside of that context.” Who knew.
